Ramble Renovation
This project began as a few simple updates for a family relocating from FL. The couple had three girls who would be starting school in the area, and our goal was to update the home to our clients taste before school began. That quickly changed! Our clients ultimately decided to fully renovate the home to better function for their families needs. And it was a good decision, because schools were shut down just after completion of the renovations, due to COVID. The changes to the home turned out to be just right for the homeowners and their children, and just in time. We introduced them to our preferred architect and general contractor collaborators, and the whole team got to work reimagining the home.
The exterior of the house was once dark and traditional, but our team reimagined the exterior in over mortared brick, painted out with contrasting dark trim, and a custom walnut front door. Once inside, the stairway features a custom steel handrail, and massive new lanterns to light the foyer and stairs. The powder bath has a black and white mosaic wet wall for a powerful impact for guests and visitors. The dining room ceiling is a custom oak design that our contractor and his trim carpenters realized in white oak with a custom stain. The same stain was used on the new kitchen and living room ceiling, which is another custom design. When purchased, the living room was a two story space with a high vaulted ceiling. Our clients prefer cozy spaces, so that ceiling was lowered and clad in white oak. Through collaboration with Eric Daffron, AIA and the general contractor, MS Hammett construction, the area above became a new room, her library which is clad in custom designed built-ins to house her years of scrapbooks created for her daughters.
Both the kitchen and wet bar are custom designs by our team, and realized in collaboration with the team at Keystone Kitchen and Bath. The fireplace design is also custom and features slabs of soapstone, with floating concrete hearth and mantel. The built in is the same oak stain as the Kitchen. The backsplash is a natural quartzite stone slab, as is the island countertop. A custom steel hood in a gunmetal finish is the perfect compliment to the kitchen, as is the linear sink at the island. Furnishings and decor are a mix of new pieces we had designed for each room, and a smattering of the clients existing pieces. The wall of doors open for indoor outdoor living and entertaining, and feature another custom fireplace design. One of the best parts of this space was shopping in local galleries with the homeowner, as we built a collection of locally sourced artwork and objects for the new home.
The master bedroom was also reimagined with a new ceiling, a custom armoire to house the TV and a built-in linen closet. In the bathroom, new vanities and countertops were added but the existing stone floor and shower remained. The freestanding tub was replaced with a more modern silhouette. The homeowner even took work calls from the custom sit down vanity during the COVID shut down, where she could shut the door and work peacefully. Closets were outfitted with custom storage solutions as well. The daughters enjoyed putting their own stamp on each of their rooms. They told us their color preferences, and we selected furniture and fabrics unique to each of their tastes, for colorful and fun kids rooms! MS Hammett Construction also oversaw the addition of the outdoor living areas including the pool and spa and a new bluestone deck. The exterior fireplaces were redesigned in painted brick with custom concrete hearths and mantels.
In the end, our clients have a customized home with features unique to their families taste and needs. Our team collaborated with the architect, builder and trades throughout construction so the family could focus on their relocation to NC. We were thrilled to incorporate so many custom features, and utilize the plethora of talent in western north carolina and in Asheville in particular. We price ourselves on connecting clients with local resources, including the architect and builder, showrooms, craftsmen, workrooms, artists and galleries. But the best part of all was seeing how much the young girls each enjoyed their personalized rooms in their new home. That made mom happy, and her design team was thrilled too!
