Sunset Summit Renovation
Our client’s existing home sits atop Asheville’s Town Mountain, in a neighborhood of mid century homes. The existing home has incredible long range mountain views, and had previously been renovated by the former owners. However, it also featured an outdated Kitchen with an odd layout, and lacked the outdoor living and dining space that would take advantage of the views. Those shortcomings were the original inspiration for the renovations. The new homeowners looked to Kyle from Robinson Design Studio for a design intended to expand the main level of the home to include covered outdoor living space, a larger Kitchen, a new Butler’s Pantry, and a renovated Master Suite with an added sitting room that includes outdoor access. In response, the rear of the home was extended outward toward the views, through a cantilevered steel design. The homeowners then selected Osada Construction to implement the new layout.
A+R partnered with the homeowners, architect and builder throughout construction, providing input regarding room layouts, interior finish selections, cabinetry and built in designs, tile + countertop selections, and selections of all fixtures and finishes, including the furniture and decor. The homeowners also had an existing artwork collection that we incorporated into their interiors.
The Kitchen floor space expanded outward, and a new picture window was placed over the sink area. New walnut cabinetry with slab doors is the star of the Kitchen, while a custom steel hood and leathered quartzite island top and slab backsplash add natural beauty and durability. Behind the Kitchen is a Butler’s Pantry featuring a coffee station, pantry storage, a sink and a slab splash to encase the new picture window.
The Dining and Wet Bar spaces are located between the Kitchen and Living Room. Here, a custom round dining table sits beneath the lighted oak ceiling detail. The steel from the Kitchen hood is repeated as the backsplash and shelving at the Wet Bar. Steel is featured once again at the custom fireplace wall, along with bluestone accents and walnut built-ins for display. The new covered outdoor living space is off the Living and Dining areas, with expansive glass doors that open for indoor/outdoor living and entertaining. In the Living Room, we sourced North and South Carolina made furnishings, having some pieces customized for our client’s needs. Area rugs throughout the home were also sourced locally, through Textura Rugs.
In the Master Suite, a sitting area was added, as were new windows at the bed wall, and built-ins across from the bed. Regionally made furniture graces these spaces as well. Our clients desired a bathroom tile that would be easy to maintain. Our designers specified a large format porcelain panel product, to minimize seams and grout joints in this room. The patterns mimic marble, without the maintenance a natural stone would have required. This room also features a rift cut oak floating vanity, large curbless walk in shower and a freestanding tub.
The finished home is an example of what’s possible when the homeowners, architect, builder and designer work together toward a common goal. Our clients have been enjoying their views and art collection from their transformed home, and entertaining regularly in their new outdoor space. The home now reflects their tastes and meets their functional cooking and entertaining needs. All this, while their interiors pay homage to the mid century neighborhood, while making the most out of the mountain views beyond. We expect many meals and memories to be made in this new space that now makes the most of its location.
